The True Cost is a documentary film made in 2015, directed by Andrew Morgan that focuses on fast fashion. It attacks the industry of fashion by revealing the alarming impacts that cheap clothing is generating on people and for the environment.

According to the Danish Fashion Institute, fashion is the world's second worst polluter after the oil industry.

« In Kanpur, leather tanneries dump an estimated 50 million liters of chemical waste every day in the Ganges River, contaminating crops and running water, leaving millions of children deformed and adults riddled with cancer. »

Moreover, India, China and US have the world’s biggest cotton factories which nowadays grow genetically modified cotton requiring strong pesticides.

« there is a growing rate of cancer in areas of cotton farming thanks to those pesticides, with suicide rates also on the rise as farmers face mounting debt while struggling to keep prices low enough for fast-fashion clients. »

The Rana Plaza colapse in 2013 was the event that persuades Andrew Morgan to make the film. 1130 workers died in one day. With the involvement of Stella McCartney, Livia Firth, and environmental activist Vandana Shiva, the film shows poor working conditions and attacks how consumerism, globalization, capitalism affect developing countries.

« Today, we consume 400 percent more clothing than we did two decades ago. »

The 500 000$ film’s budget was obtained through crowdfunding platforms (such as Kickstarter) or individual investors. No money was accepted from companies or non-governmental organizations in order to keep the project its independance.

Morgan visited thirteens countries where he got all the crucial information. Livia Firth made many interviews possible by introducing him to the eco fashion world.
