Two entrepreneurs from Palm Beach County, Florida have created the world’s first commercial hemp liqueur.

The new drink is called Myschyf, is bright green, and is now available in over 150 bars, restaurants and stores.

After meeting whilst working at Blue Martini, business partners Garett Hagan and Drew Shprintz found themselves talking about the perfect spirit whilst hiking. According to Hagan: “I pulled these hemp seeds out of my bag - they have tons of protein and Omega 3. They’re so small buy have all this flavour.”

“Shprintz adds: “…and he gives me some. It had kind of a nuttiness, but you know how some nuts are more earthy, more roasted? It’s like a caramelised sweetness, like a good bottle of wine. That started us down that rabbit hole.”

Although tourism, mining and biodiversity projects are still permitted, logging will be outlawed on an additional 730,000 acres of old-growth rainforest. The protected old-growth area will extend to 73.6 million acres, up from 50 to 70 percent. Activists have praised the new rules.

The pair experimented with different pairing flavours, made more difficult because of the relatively unknown flavour of hemp, and eventually settled on pistachio. For around a year they developed the flavour before submitting it to the authorities, who unsurprisingly requested that the word ‘hemp’ be removed from the packaging.

Myschyf has become a popular mixer despite it’s unusual special ingredient, although it’s creators say that it was designed to be consumed straight. Tiki-bar worker Josh Gates suggests mixing it with a cocktail of pineapple juice, orange bitters, cream of coconut and a smoke cinnamon stick.

The new liqueur has also found a friend in the calorie-counting drinker. According to Hagan, Myschyf has less than one gram of sugar per ounce, making it lighter than vodka.

“We’ve created a new category. It’s high proof, low sugar” says Hagan.
