House of Marley has announced the launch of a turntable, to add to their growing range of sustainable audio products.

Bob Marley’s son, Rohan, introduced the turntable called Stir It Up at the recent CES 2016. It’s expected to become available later in the year.

The turntable continues House of Marley’s tradition of sustainability, using a selection of materials recycled from old plastics. The cabinet features bamboo, visible on the top surface and finished very elegantly. The sides are covered in their already used Rewind fabric. “The idea is to send a message about making electronics that not only look great, but also keep the earth a little cleaner.” writes Ryan Waniata of Digital Trends. The Stir It Up also features silicon rubber and aluminium.

The Rewind fabric is particularly interesting. It’s made from a mix of reclaimed hemp and organic cotton, contains the fibres of recycled water bottles (rPET), and is finished using water-based dyes. Used in black, it creates a lovely subdued but tactile look and feel.

“It’s always interesting to see how we’re able to, with craftsmanship … to bring these cool sustainable materials, cool metals into the House of Marley, and keeping that sustainable movement as well,” said Marley.

At first it looks like the material for the top platter is a missed opportunity, but that too is made from a new silicone rubber which is made from recycled materials.

On the rather unique (for electronics) materials, Marley exclaims: “It looks good!” I don’t understand why others don’t utilise it…”

We think it looks great. Very minimal, non-fussy, and a great use of bamboo especially. House of Marley are making an effort for sustainability.
