We’ve become used to the likes of almond milk and coconut milk hitting our shelves with various claims to a healthy lifestyle. Now there’s a new alternative which could be available soon.
900mg of Omega-3 fatty acid. 2800mg of Omega-6 fatty acid. 46% of your RDA of calcium. All 10 of your essential amino acids.
All of this can be found in a glass of hemp milk, the latest in a trend of new healthier alternatives to traditional cows milk. That same glass also holds potassium, phosphorous, riboflavin, vitamins A, E, B12 and D, folic acid, magnesium, iron, zinc, 4 grams of digestible protein, and no cholesterol.
These promise to provide a number of health benefits, including a strengthened immune system and a healthy heart.
Recently, the British Medical Journal has stated that cow’s milk can actually be bad for our bodies. It has been attributed to greater mortality in men and women, and bone weakness in women. Hemp milk is rumoured to be a great tasting alternative to cow’s milk, which supports the body with nutrients without causing harm. Hemp milk can be more easily digested than cow’s milk.
Vegans can drink hemp milk, as it’s made from hemp seeds and water. It isn’t like some may suggest, made from marijuana - there isn’t nearly enough THC to have any psychoactive affects.
More and more people are waking up to how their food is produced, reflected in sales of almond milk. In 2015 US sales grew by 40% to $700 million.
It’s possible to make hemp milk yourself, with just half a cup of shelled hemp seeds and 2 cups of purified water. But we really hope this hits our shelves soon, because if there’s a place for milk with crazy health benefits then hemp milk should be there.
