There’s a new eco clothing material on the block, called Denimite.
Retail giant H&M have recently announced the material as part of their Conscious Exclusive collection.
According to an article at just-style.com, Denimite “is made from worn out denim that is shredded and mixed into an organic resin”. The fibres can be identified by their unique blue/white marbling, and 13 pairs of worn out jeans are needed to produce one sheet.
Denimite, a cotton fibre bio-composite, “is said to be highly mouldable, lightweight and tough, with no off gassing of toxic chemicals” writes Leonie Barrie.
H&M recently launched their new Conscious Exclusive collection in Paris, which included garments utilising various other sustainable materials such as recycled linen, organic silk, and of course, hemp. Inspiration came from the archives of it’s venue - the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Not a bad place to start!
H&M collects material by offering to take in customers’ old clothing. So far they’ve collected over 25,000 tonnes, only last year launching their first truly recycled garments. For World Recycling Week they aim to collect a further 1,000 tonnes of worn-out clothing across it’s 3,600 stores worldwide.
We think materials like Denimite are a major step forward for such a major retailer, towards appreciating how important sustainable fashion really is. More to the point, H&M's collection confirms that sustainable fashion can be genuinely desirable.
